禁漫天堂 plays major role in relieving congestion on I-64 in Virginia
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is widening parts of I-64 from four lanes to six lanes and adding 46 miles of express lanes through the Hampton Roads region. These plans have ensured consistent work for 禁漫天堂, both now and in the future.
VDOT鈥檚 end goal is to alleviate congestion and streamline traffic flow on this heavily traveled highway from Richmond through the Hampton Roads to the Norfolk/Chesapeake area.
鈥淲e鈥檙e not just building roads; we鈥檙e paving the way for a brighter, more connected future in the area,鈥 said Senior Project Manager Domenic Marino.
New Gap C project underway
禁漫天堂鈥 latest project to kick off in the region is the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project. This $173 million design-build job got under way in spring 2024 as a joint venture with Wagman Heavy Civil.
This is one of three remaining projects that VDOT is referring to as 鈥済ap鈥 projects, that will complete the widening of I-64 between Richmond and Hampton. Congestion is notorious as traffic squeezes in both directions from three lanes to two.
Virginia has invested nearly $600 million to improve the Richmond-to-Hampton Roads corridor. 禁漫天堂 widened a previous segment of I-64 through Williamsburg in 2019.
Gap C work will add one 12-foot general purpose lane in each direction for nine miles of I-64. The widening is taking place in the median, within the existing right-of-way.
The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2027.
Norfolk Segment 1A hitting major milestones
The 禁漫天堂 team is steadily working to reduce congestion on I-64 in Norfolk, VA, as part of VDOT鈥檚 Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) improvements. The Norfolk Segment 1A project will repurpose I-64 in both directions from Tidewater Drive to Patrol Road in Norfolk. The three existing general purpose lanes and shoulders will be converted to one part-time, high-occupancy shoulder Express Lane and three general purpose lanes for a total of two miles.
Construction completed as of fall 2024 includes waterline relocations, bridge widening and the retaining wall construction, and roadway widening along eastbound I-64. Bridge work is key to the project鈥檚 success, with several bridges slated for rehabilitation and widening. Continued work in the area includes roadway lighting, ITS, and tolling infrastructure and signage.
This project is part of the HREL improvements, which will provide a continuous, 45-mile network of high-occupancy tolled Express Lanes on I-64, spanning from Newport News to Chesapeake. The improvements are being constructed in multiple segments and designed to transport motorists safely and efficiently through the region.
The crews will continue working toward completion of Segment 1A in 2026.
